Mushroom Treasures in Saltdal

Autumn in Saltdal has its own special magic – crisp, clear days, forests glowing with color, and a rich variety of wild mushrooms. Among the most treasured finds is the chanterelle, often called the “gold of the forest.” Not only is it delicious, but it’s also one of the easiest mushrooms for beginners to recognize.

Chanterelles – easy to pick

Chanterelles have a distinctive golden-yellow color and a funnel-shaped cap that makes them stand out among autumn leaves and moss. They often grow in groups, so if you spot one, chances are good that more are hiding nearby. Look for them along paths, in birch and spruce forests, and in slightly moist – but not waterlogged – ground.

Handy tips for your mushroom trip

  • Bring a basket or cloth bag – plastic bags will damage the mushrooms.
  • A small mushroom knife is useful for cutting them cleanly and brushing off soil.
  • Get yourself a mushroom field guide.
  • Stay alert – many mushrooms look alike. If in doubt, leave it in the forest.

Join a course & visit a mushroom inspection

If mushroom picking sounds exciting, consider joining a course to learn more! Even though chanterelles are among the safest edible mushrooms, we always recommend visiting a mushroom inspection service. Certified experts can check your harvest and ensure everything you bring home is safe. Check out Salten Naturlag on Facebook for information about local mushroom inspections and events.

Get out there

Mushroom trips are about more than filling your basket – they’re about the experience. Strolling through the forest, listening to birdsong, breathing in the scent of damp moss, and letting your shoulders relax. And who knows – you might even stumble upon a few lingonberries along the way.
