GRENDECUP!

For those who are not familiar with the local traditions, the Grendecup weekend (almost) surpasses both birthdays, anniversaries, and Christmas Eve for the average Saltdaling (a person from Saltdal)!

Once a year, half of the town’s residents come together in a friendly football tournament, with teams consisting of old friends, high school classmates, relatives, and coworkers. You’ll find football teams with quirky names such as: «Skurkeklubben» (The Villain Club), «Fragleberget», «Gluteus», and «Piratene» (The Pirates)

Local businesses usually celebrate the weekend with sales or events, and local businesses sponsor the event. Those who don’t play football themselves join in as cheerleaders, and volunteers cook traditional Norwegian «Lapskaus» (A stew) and brew coffee.

In other words, just as Americans flock home for Thanksgiving, the people of Saltdal flock home for the Grendecup! If you happen to be in Saltdal this weekend, please feel free to join the locals cheering in the football arena =)

Grendecup Party at Tørst´n Bar with DJ Hankaspersen
Hongri is open until 01:00 and has its own Grendecup menu (kitchen closes at 21:00)
